New tempered glass brings e-paper experience to iPad Mini

Here’s a tempered glass screen protector that promises to turn a tablet into an e-reader. Now, that won’t happen through an e-book reading app. Rather, it’s a new screen protector with a matte feel that, as a Yahoo report mentions, can reduce tablet screen glare enough to make it screen-like E Ink supplied with electronic reading devices. As the images also revealed, the display with a black background and white font looked quite easy on the eyes. When placed with a Kobo device, the screen appears glare-free, which will put the least strain on the eyes.

The screen protector in question is from a company called Imos which has been described on online retail site Shopee as a “matte film tempered glass protector” (translated from Chinese) which also has anti- -fingerprints. Plus, the screen protector is designed to fit the iPad Mini 4 and Mini 5 models specifically. Plus, at $1,250 for a set of 10, it’s not cheap either. The price for a single piece of screen protector is almost the same as a brand new Kindle e-reader.

Meanwhile, it’s unclear how the matte screen protector works when a black font is used on a white background. Or for that matter, how the iPad Mini with the screen protector will be like watching other content, which can be like videos, pages having color screens, or when used for other purposes than reading the screen.

Either way, it’ll still be nice to get the same kind of feel of an E Ink display just by applying tempered glass. It will be even better if the same tempered glass does not hinder the normal operation of the tablet such as when it is used for other tasks like playing games, watching videos, surfing the web, etc.
