Samsung could produce twice as many Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 phones and sell them at lower prices as it continues to dominate flexible displays.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 is coming and it’s going to be an exciting smartphone that could cost less than last year’s Z Fold 3. The price trend of smartphones has been rising sharply for the past few years as customer expectations rise and manufacturing challenges become tougher. This year, that might finally change, and it’s definitely time for a lower-cost foldable.
Samsung broke new ground with its foldable phone in 2019 and made it a more reliable product, earning respect and attention from a wider audience with the Galaxy Z Fold 2. In the third generation, it became a refined device that could serve as a smartphone. or a tablet and is usable enough in either form to be worthy of everyday use. It’s still not the most durable product in the world, but the Galaxy Z Fold 3 is reliable and durable provided a little care is taken.
When it comes to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 4, rumors are piling up. A Tweeter Ross Young, a display supply chain expert with a solid track record, said he expects a much larger order from Samsung this year, more than double that of the previous generation. Young also suggested that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 might have a lower price. Of course, higher volumes reduce costs, and perhaps Samsung plans to pass some of those savings on to the customer to push its edge by selling an overwhelming majority of foldable phones before rivals can ramp up production. Another top Samsung tipster, Ice Universe, tweeted that the Galaxy Z Fold 4 will be smaller and lighter than the Z Fold 3.
The advantages of a small Z-fold 4
The rumor of a smaller Galaxy Z Fold 4 might be concerning for those looking for an ever bigger screen, but slimmer bezels have also been mentioned. This allows for more screen real estate in a smaller body and could mean that only the exterior dimensions are reduced, while the big, beautiful screen remains roughly the same size. The cover display could also be upgraded with an edge-to-edge display, instead of the current design which stops at the hinge.
Samsung no doubt likes dominating the foldable phone market, but it may have to maintain that position as its S-series is struggling somewhat. To increase foldable sales beyond the current market, the cost must come down. Young suggested that the two Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 and the price of the Z Flip 4 could be reduced, potentially removing one of the few remaining barriers to widespread adoption of flexible screen technology.
